Horses in Training

Ashmount Forge Farriery provides a fully comprehensive farriery service for horses in training, delivered by experienced, fully qualified farriers working to the highest professional standards. Our emphasis is on quality of workmanship, consistency, and diligence, with every horse managed as part of an integrated, considered programme focused on long-term soundness and performance.

We operate across multiple racing stables, tailoring our service to the specific requirements of each yard, taking into account stable size, trainer preferences, and day-to-day operational demands. Our farriery service covers all aspects of hoof care management within the training environment, including regular horse checks, preparation and plating of runners, and managing horses around owner visits. This is supported by clear, consistent communication with trainers and their teams, whether verbal or written via email or WhatsApp. This structured, high-end service ensures that farriery requirements are fully taken care of, allowing the wider training operation to function smoothly while supporting the horse throughout its training programme.

Horses at Stud

Farriery during the early stages of a horse’s life is one of the most influential periods for shaping long-term soundness and athletic potential. Ashmount Forge provides specialist stud farriery with a strong emphasis on young stock, where considered intervention can positively influence limb development, conformation, and balance, with direct implications for both future performance and commercial value.

A responsible, measured approach to correction underpins this work. The aim is to achieve meaningful improvement while maintaining a strong, symmetrical hoof as the foundation of the horse. Decisions are made holistically, working closely with stud managers and veterinary surgeons, and may involve corrective trimming, appropriate use of shoes and modern materials, or, where indicated, advocating for timely surgical intervention as part of a coordinated management plan.

This collaborative approach is vital in ensuring we produce well-balanced, sound horses capable of reaching their full athletic potential.

Rehabilitation

Ashmount Forge provides specialist rehabilitation farriery for horses recovering from injury or managing ongoing soundness challenges. While hoof pathology is often a primary consideration, careful attention is also given to the wider influence of farriery on stance, posture, and dynamic movement. Shoe choice and fit can have a significant effect on how the horse lands, loads, and moves, with implications not only for the hoof capsule itself, but for structures further up the limb. Close collaboration with veterinary surgeons ensures that the shoeing plan is aligned with diagnostic findings and rehabilitation goals. Each case is managed through detailed assessment, appropriate corrective farriery, and ongoing review, with the aim of restoring comfortable, efficient movement and reducing the risk of re-injury.

Consultancy

Stephen offers a comprehensive consultation service, delivered in the UK and internationally, supporting owners, trainers, veterinary surgeons, and farriery teams. Consultancy is tailored to the needs of each client and may involve reviewing individual horses, maintaining an overview of hoof care provision, or working alongside established professional teams to support shoeing strategy and case management.

This work often includes close collaboration with farriers, veterinarians, and management, with an emphasis on understanding both the technical and organisational structures within which teams operate. Where appropriate, consultancy may involve practical input with more challenging cases, as well as guidance on farriery standards, service provision, and best practice.

The consultancy approach is collaborative rather than directive, focused on positive influence, open discussion, and clear communication, with the aim of supporting informed decision-making and sustainable, high-quality outcomes for the horse.
